Barnyard Texture Collage

A trip to my local craft store inspired this texture filled collage. It all started when I saw the cow print flannel. I decided that I had to incorporate it into an art project for my classroom. I added a few other textural materials, and came up with this barnyard collage.

I am looking forward to seeing how the children use will these items, when they are given the opportunity to create their own. I hope that you all will have fun creating your own barnyard collages.

As an added note, I have found that reading books about the farm and life in the barnyard, makes this a more meaningful art project. A favorite of the children’s is Barnyard Banter by Denise Fleming.

MATERIALS USED:

– Construction paper
– Raffia
– Mini eggs
– Chicken feed
– Cow print flannel
– Woolly fabric
– Feathers
– Glue
– Scissors

Mrs. Wishy-Washy’s Farm Pig Craft

We’ve been having such a good time with our farm unit. We read Mrs. Wishy-Washy’s Farm, by Joy Cowley, on Monday and Tuesday, and the children have asked to read it again every day since. I guess you could say they have a slight obsession with the Mrs. and her silly animals. In this story, the animals flee the farm in order to get out of a good scrubbing.

“No more washing!” they say.

The animals make their way into the city where adventure ensues. My kids really enjoy the part where the animals find themselves in a hardware store and make a mess with the paint. So I am hoping that they will also enjoy thumb printing their own splattered pigs.

– Pink pipe cleaners/fuzzy sticks

Favorite Farm Animal Graph

Spring has sprung, and we are deep into our On the Farm Unit. This week, we’ve been busy graphing our favorite farm animals. The children are learning that graphs are a way to organize information. We talked about how their favorite animals are the information, and the graph is the organizer. When our graph was completed, I worked with small groups to evaluate the data. We counted how many people liked each animal, and worked with the concept of more/less/same. Looks like it’s the horse for the win!
